How to marinate tofu without soy sauce
On tips on how to marinate tofu without soy sauce, follow the procedures below;
Preparing the first ingredient—TOFU!
When getting your tofu ready, you want to bear some things in mind. First, the kind of tofu that you work with should depend on the nature of your recipe. For example, if you are going to grill your tofu, you would want to work with tofu that’s firm enough. For recipes that will involve you marinating your tofu, work with tofu that has increased firmness.
Also, you might have heard about tofu being pressed before being used. How valid is this? Well, yes, pressed tofu tastes even better! If you plan on getting your tofu crispy and crunchy, you shouldn’t skip this process! Tofu can be pressed manually or with a device known as the tofu press. To use the tofu press, follow the steps below;
– Fix the tofu within the press and then, keep the plates firm with the aid of the screws.
– The whole process involves you pressing the tofu down with the plates.
– So, consequently, depress the plates further by increasing the pressure.
– Ensure that you press your tofu within a container with an outlet so that the water that drips out (as a result of the pressure) can get drained easily.
To press down your tofu without a press, follow the steps below;
– Unwrap the tofu from its pack and then, pour off the liquid.
– Use a towel to wrap the block of tofu.
– Fix the wrapped tofu on a baking sheet.
– Place a very heavy pan on the top of the wrapped tofu.
– Consequently add more weights to the pan so that the pressure on the tofu increases.
– Ensure that you get about half a cup of liquid out of the tofu.
– You can then work with the tofu once you have pressed it enough.
Also, if your recipe requires your tofu having a bit of firmness, you might want to freeze it. How does this process work? On freezing your tofu, the water that is locked up within the mass gets frozen. Consequently, the small ice balls within the tofu create permanent holes or pockets.
These pockets add a serious degree of texture to the tofu. The pockets also allow for spaces that your marinade can conveniently sit in.
Working with Marinades!
Marinades are very essential when it comes to integrating flavor into tofu slices. Before you get your tofu marinated, you want to ensure that the block is cut up into whatever shape you like. You could also just marinate the whole tofu without cutting it into different sizes. You can do that if you plan on getting the tofu frozen after the process of marinating it.
The ingredients needed for your marinades include the following;
- Oil
You can work with any of these oils— olive oil, sesame oil, etc. Oils help your tofu to be crispy!
- Acidic foods
These foods help the ingredients to go deep down into the tofu. It allows for a thorough marinating process. Examples include lemon juices, lime juice, orange, balsamic vinegar, apple cider, etc.
- Salty spices
Miso paste, tamari sauce, etc, are great spices that add salty flavors to your tofu.
- Sweet spices
Examples of these sweet spices include maple syrup, molasses, brown sugar, etc.
